The Pretty Entrepreneur Behind The Brand: Nikki and Mallory

I was so happy to do this interview with Treasure Mallory. Treasure is the founder, designer and creative mind of Nikki and Mallory specializing in handmade dope handbags and accessories.  Treasure answered from the heart , and I felt the authenticity and  passion she has in this interview. Enjoy the creative force behind the brand of Nikki and Mallory below.

1.    You’re the creator, founder and face behind the brand Nikki and Mallory tell us your name, where you are from and how long you've been an entrepreneur?

That’s me! My Name is Treasure Mallory. People always ask if Treasure is my real name  so before you start to wonder, it is my government  I’m from Pasadena, California but my family is from North Carolina. As much as I’d like just claim Cali, the East is in my raising, it’s in my blood. Mentally I’ve ALWAYS been an entrepreneur; having to listen to a “boss” and follow protocol has always been hysterical to me [still laughs] - but realistically, I’ve been an entrepreneur since 2013, and finally Launched my Line Oct 2015.

2.    Why did you become a designer ? Many creatives have other things they might have dabbled in before their current business, what about you ?

Loving The Pretty Entrepreneur Within

Sis, when is the last time you loved on yourself? I mean REALLY loved on yourself? I don't mean this in the erotic sense. I'm talking about looking inward to consider your spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional needs, then caring for yourself accordingly. When is the last time you took the necessary steps to show yourself some love in this way? Don't feel bad if it's been a long time for you. It happens to the best of us, love.

See as entrepreneurs, we often place ourselves on the bottom of our to-do lists. We may have full-time jobs, are enrolled in school full-time, and/or have families as well as other obligations and responsibilities. This means we are sacrificing to pour every minute of our spare time into starting our businesses and building our brands. We stay up late burning the midnight oil, breathing life into visions many around us may not yet understand. So not only are we overworked, overwhelmed, and in dire need of a good night's rest, we often feel like we're all alone out here, without a help or support in sight. And while we like to think that the strength of our vision or dream may sustain us, it won't. Because if this strong vision isn’t coupled with a strong sense of self-love, any distraction or negative experience could end up damaging our entrepreneurial efforts.

Love and Entrepreneurship

I’m so glad blogs exist because Facebook isn’t always the appropriate medium to crack open your brain and let it pour. Although this was almost an FB post, thank goodness I refrained.

I refrained because everyone isn’t going to get it and that’s OK.

On this journey of entrepreneurship, I’ve learned that being “OK” is a suitable emotion. I’m OK with people not agreeing with me, OK with folks wishing I’d just give up on my life and live the one they want me live, and I’m OK that my vag’s dry spell for the last couple of months may very well extend to the end of the year.

3 Ways Settling Kills Our Creativity

We all know what it means to settle for less in life. We’ve opted for the easy job that didn’t require 100% of our talents or work ethic a time or two. We’ve found ourselves in unfulfilling relationships wanting more from others than they ever intended to give us. And maybe we’ve even gone against producing our best work as creative entrepreneurs by taking the “easy way out” several times over. Please tell me I’m not the only one guilty of doing these things.

What causes us to “settle,” accepting much less than what we know to be the best for us? Perhaps we fear that we aren’t good enough to receive the best. Maybe we don’t believe we are worthy of more than we’ve accepted over time for whatever reason. In the past, I was the type of person who loved to play the background when it came to sharing my work. I settled by dimming my own light because I feared that others wouldn’t be impressed by what I had to offer. And this underdog, defeatist behavior robbed me of doing my creative best.

A letter to my daughter and yours….

The world insists being a woman of color is a malady, something to apologize for or fix quickly through assimilation. Change your voice. Change your hair. And by God, be anything but “too black.” Close your eyes to injustices and seek the illusion of distractions. You are too powerless to make a difference. Slowly, the system of white supremacy wants you to disappear, until you no longer recognize yourself in the mirror, caramel brown skin fading under the weight of sadness. Screw that! You are here to reign, not resign yourself to mere existence.
